Do you want to learn something new and see somewhere different while having a good day out?

We have arranged a variety of trips with introductory talks, guided tours and commentaries which will help you to make the most of your visit.

LIVERPOOL & THE TERRACOTTA ARMY

A wonderful opportunity to visit China’s First Emperor
and the Terracotta Warriors Exhibition at the World Museum, Liverpool.
There will be time to spare in the City before leaving at 4.00pm

 

Thursday, 12th July             Cost:   £8.00 + Coach Transport*        Depart 12.30 pm from Westgate

BRITISH IRONWORK CENTRE, near Oswestry

£8.00 includes tea, tip and donation to Hope House Hospice.
The British Ironwork Centre is dedicated to celebrating and promoting the diversity in metal.  
View the metal safari sculptures and demonstrations before a cream tea at 3.00 pm in The Forge Café.  
Leaving Centre at 4.30pm

 

Thursday, 30th August         Cost: £7.00 + £12.00 + Coach Transport*      Depart 9.00 am from Westgate

SPACEGUARD CENTRE, Knighton & JUDGES LODGING, Presteigne

In the morning we will have a conducted tour of the Spaceguard Centre near Knighton.
It is an astronomical observatory that specialises in studying the danger of Asteroids or comet
impacts and includes a planetarium, orrery,meteorites and telescopes for observing the sky.
PLEASE NOTE: This Tour lasts an hour and a half and includesstanding for quite a time.

In the afternoon we will travel to Presteigne to visit the Judge’s Lodging. 
This is where we can step back in time to the 1870’s and see how the world looked to the Victorian Judges, their servants and felonious guests.
We will end the afternoon sampling ‘Jelly and Ice-Cream for Grown-ups’!

Thursday 18th October          Cost:   £13.50 + £5.00  + Coach Transport*    Depart 9.00 am from Westgate  

LLANGOLLEN RAILWAY & PLAS NEWYDD, Llangollen

Take a trip back in time and ride in a 1950’s carriage being hauled by a classic steam train. 
Enjoy the wonderful sights of the picturesque Dee Valley and hopefully some autumn colour.

In the afternoon we will visit Plas Newydd home of the ‘Ladies of Llangollen’ – two ladies who captured the imagination of Regency Society when they ran away and set up home in Wales. 
They turned a simple cottage into an extraordinary gothicised home with wood carvings & stained glass.

Wednesday, 7th November       Cost:  £25 for Tour + Coach Transport*      Depart 9.30am from Westgate

HEREFORD CITY & CHASE DISTILLERY TOUR

Spend time in Hereford Centre leaving early afternoon for Chase Distillery, NW of the City.
This family owned distillery creates vodka and gin from produce grown on the farm.
The tour includes a tasting and a chance to buy their spirits. £10 of the tour cost is redeemable when spending £20 in the shop.

NEWMAN BROTHERS COFFINWORKS, Birmingham &
GEORGE HOOK’S MOTHER OF PEARL BUTTON FACTORY, Smethwic
k

The Coffin works are a Victorian time capsule in the Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham.
The shelves and workbenches are full of original stock and tools of the trade for producing
the world’s finest coffin furniture and fittings.

We will follow our visit with a buffet lunch at the Shakespeare Inn on Summer Row.

Then in the afternoon we will visit George Hook’s Mother of Pearl Button Factory
in Smethwick, which we heard about at one of the U3A Speaker Meetings last year.
